Greetings-

New to this forum, looking for an answer that I cant seem to find.

I've been playing a bit more with coupled approaches with my autopilot with GPSS etc.  Its wonderful.  One problem I've experienced is when I have the GPS approach loaded and activated is that it sometimes wants to do a hold when its not required. I see that it has inserted "hold" into the flight plan. If I try and delete that waypoint then the whole approach is abandoned.  If I can see that its planning a hold, I could possibly select 'vectors to final', but I'm trying to get to the point to have the AP do it all.  Obviously not an issue when hand flying, I'm trying to explore the capabilities of the Autopilot when driven by the 430W.

regards-

Tim (a CFII trying to learn the 430W better!)

Hi Tim.

Could you give an example?

If you are not being vectored to final then how can you legally skip a published hold?  If it were a published NoPT transition then the GPS would give you the option to hold or not.

That said, you can go into the flight plan and choose DIRECT DIRECT to the waypoint where you wish to intercept the final approach path.

Thanks Richard-

How does the 430/530 give me the option to hold or not?

In the specific case I experienced on saturday, I was receiving vectors and I asked for direct to XXX for intercept as I wanted to see how the AP would do it...then obviously it wanted to enter the hold. Perhaps thats a gray area.

On another approach (different day) I went to the flight plan and selected direct direct but I believe that voided out the activated approach.  If I then reactivate will all be OK?

thanks!

Tim

On a published route where there is a colocated IAF and IF, i.e. where the hold is optional, the 430 will prompt you whether you want to hold or not when loading the approach.

In the example you gave, a hold would be mandatory unless you got vectors to final.

On another approach (different day) I went to the flight plan and selected direct direct but I believe that voided out the activated approach.

It will activate the approach starting at the chosen segment.

If I then reactivate will all be OK?

Do not do this by choosing "Activate Approach."  This is one of the deadlier nuances of the 430 interface.  There was a fatal accident in California in a Cirrus for this reason.  Choosing "Activate Approach" will take you back to the IAF, even if your altitude is too low to do so.
