A question concerning normal 430W operations. Is there a shortcut to copy the current direct-to WPT from the 430W database into the active FP ?
Example:
- you fly / follow an active flight plan,
- you search (and find) an intersection on the WPT / intersections page (not part of the active FP), this could be an off-course WPT, a amended clearance by ATC,
- you go direct-to this WPT,
- NOW, and without entering it manually, you want to insert this "active" WPT into your suspended FP,
Checked the Garmin manuals and simulator, no success. On the other hand I simply cannot believe that such simple shortcut (menu item ?) ain't available since the operation described above is almost daily routine for the IFR pilot and going through some 15 steps to reenter the already selected WPT simply wouldn't make any sense, not from the user's nor the programmer's point of view.
Any help / idea welcome - J

There is no such shortcut.
For this reason, I advise simply never using Direct-To outside of a flight plan when flying IFR. That way if your flight plan is amended to something not direct, you do not have to re-enter the active waypoint.

Thanks for the quick response Richard.
What amazes me (and made me post this question in the first place) is the fact that my Garmin 496 does have this feature.
So let me ask : how exactly do you teach your students to fly to the deviation fix if you don´t change the 430 flight plan ? If ATC gave you some sort of 5-letter fix some 25 miles out you need some sort of course guidance don´t you ? simply looking at the map (paper or 430) want really help ...
PS: nice website !! ... makes me think I should come to PA for some upset recovery training one day

Well I think Garmin is less likely to tweak software on a certified piece of hardware - that's the ultimate limiting factor.
That said, I don't think it is that much of a drawback in actual practice because there "Nearest Intersection" is rarely a useful feature. Using your example, if ATC giave you a deviation to an intersection 25 miles away, the number of intersections within a 25-mile radius of any given place in the US airspace system is mind-boggling; the desired intersection surely would not be on a list of the 25 or even 100 nearest intersections.
I recommend students deal with this enroute in one of two ways:
Option 1 - Ask ATC for an initial heading to the fix while the pilot looks on the map
Option 2 - Ask ATC to spell the fix - then once the GPS gives bearing/distance it is easy to find on the map
