I fly a Cessna 177, with removable rear seat and full fuel single-pilot capacity of about 410 pounds. I can fly from KAJR (NE Georgia) to points within 400 NM without refueling. My wife runs Southern Cross German Shepherd Rescue, and I have made dozens of rescue and transport flights, one with 15 animals. (was fun to announce to ATC "Hello from the 15 PAX onboard")
I too fly mostly weekends and only VFR. Would love to swap stories about best and safest transport methods--most of them sleep as soon as I lift off, but there have been several notable exceptions. For a few cases (caged) I required a copilot "in case", though it has never been a problem.

Hi--I am willing to fly VFR mainly weekends....I have been flying for FlyingPaws for years, and hooked up with a number of transport groups on yahoo.
Usually (noise? vibration?) the animals sleep, but I still insist on crates!

Hi,
I have a weimaraner mom and 3 2 week old pups that need to get from Memphis to Manassas, VA. to my rescue.
Can you help?

As you can see, this coming weekend I'm scheduled to fly from here to DC/MD/PA with four GSD pups, and the added distance to Memphis (not to mention the added weight, space and responsibility) would make this weekend impossible for your Weimaraners. Moreover, KMEM to KHEF in my aircraft is more than safe refueling distance would allow--did you have a second leg pilot in mind? I could meet someone here (Cornelia/Baldwin, KAJR) or at Asheville, both of which are about halfway from Memphis to Manassas.
Or, if there's a pilot closer to KMEM, he/she could pick up your dogs and I could take them from here, whichever.
However, I am committed also for the weekend of the 6th, and I'm at a Trade Show in Vegas from 13th through 18th April, so I could only help on the 12th or on/after the 19th. If you're still interested, let me know!

This is my first time trying this. I'm not sure where you are, but if you could fit them, maybe I could get someone to drive them to where you take off. I also don't know the abreviations for what I am guessing are the airports.
So, if you could help me out a little with the place names, maybe I could figure out a plan. I can go to wherever you land in the dc area to pickup.

| I am trying to transport a 9 month old puppy from Indiana to either North or South Carolina. Does that fit in to your flight path at all? This is my first time trying to arrange a transport, so I'm not sure what information is needed.

Sorry, I'll be offline for about three weeks, and even then Indiana is a pretty long haul for me, it's a four hour trip (each way) and AVGas costs about $50/hour. To better find transport, you'll need to give a few more details:
the ID of the closest General Aviation airport at each end (often a four letter name starting with a K)
The size and weight of your pup
The urgency of your need
I don't think this site has evolved to the point where there's an administrator handling multiple leg transports, so you may have to arrange that yourself as well.
Good luck!

Hi Peter
We are a rescue group (Georgia Humane Society) based in Sharpsburg, GA and we do our on the ground long haul transport in a customzied van which can transport 35 puppies unless we have larger dogs making the trip . Not sure just how far 400 NM is but we usually go to New Jersey or Long Island, is that to far for you to travel? We would use your service if we have an overflow of dogs that we need to remove from shelters asap. I would love to be your copilot since I used to work for Delta and I love flying (no was not a flight attendant). Hope to hear from you soon.
And a big thanks for all you do for our animals!

Hi Peter,
We have a dog here in Heard County Animal Control that needs to get out a Mommy-to-be small cocker spaniel or else she will be euthanzied on Friday March 28th. There is a group in PA that will be receiving her if we can get her on a flight heading up there. The airport in PA is either Pottstown or Sanatogo.
The other group is dadsmyangelpuppyrescue and the lady I spoke with is Bianca 610 256-0930. I am with Georgia Humane Society based in Sharpsburg, GA and I can pull her and meet you (if you don't mind either at Coweta Airport or Falcon Field or possibly if there is an airport at Griffin, GA). My name is Sue and I can be reached @ 770 252-4802.
We are hoping that you can help this little girl.
Thank you for any help you can offer!

A Nautical Mile (NM) is 1.1 Statute (normal) miles, they're used by pilots and sailors as they match about one minute of latitude. 440 Miles from here gets me to about washington, DC, Orlando or Memphis. And to go the whole distance is a long day for this pilot! I get to the NY/NJ area about twice a year, have often flown dogs and pups to several places in NY/NE. But asking me to take the time (two days) and money (~$700) to fly that far North is more than I can offer. What is needed is what the Angel flight organization does--they arrange longer flights in legs of about 250 NM where pilots can meet at some intermediate point. That distance is much more frequently possible.
And about the Cocker, I can't help you, sorry. I can manage about one weekend mission a month, weather permitting.
What I've found out about rescue is that having a network of local fosters can lend precious time for transport and adopters to find each other. I have often flown to Griffin/Spaulding to pick up GSD's, they still use the gas chamber there!

Hi Peter,
Thank you for your honesty. Was not sure if it would work out with you or not so I had to ask, If I didn't then that thought would plague me for a while. Like I said our group does ground transport in our own van (no switch offs) I also realize with the high cost of fuel these days that I am asking alot from a Pilot to volunteer time and fuel to transport an animal.
Also Heard County Animal Control also uses the gas chamber as well as a lot of animal controls in rural areas do.
Thank you for your reply

Hi Tony - You should also try posting to Julia (copied below but her listing is right after this GA one, marked as AZ- Ct. in the postings) It sounds like she is able to do trips with stops all along that rte..
Good Luck!

I have a 180hp Piper Warrior. I'm based in Arizona in the winter (Dec - Apr) and in Connecticut the rest of the year. I fly the plane cross-country between seasons. Would love to help transport when I can.
