I am training with a new 530 W conversion & an SEC 55 with GPSS . I was practicing an RNAV approach to KDLS. I loaded and activated the approach and wanted to do 1 turn in the hold before executing the approach. I couldn't get the approach to suspend or get the hold to activate. What can I do to go to the hold before executing the approach? A real life situation could include instruction by ATC to go to the hold for sequencing. Should I not have activated the approach? If so, and I went to the IAF would that activate the hold for the GPSS ? Help. |

To activate the hold go to the flight plan page, turn on the cursor by pressing the right small knob, scroll to the hold with the right big knob and press DIRECT ENTER |

OK, but what if the 530 doesn't put the hold in the flightplan. For example, take the GPS Z 29L into HWD. If you use the SJC transition, the hold at JOBUS is put in the flightplan, cool. What if you use the VINCO transition (NoPT on the chart, so the hold is not put into the flightplan) but ATC asks you for a turn in the hold at JOBUS. Are you on your own (i.e. same procedure as for an unpublished hold), or is there a way to get all the great hand holding (sorry!) from the 530 as if the hold was part of the plan? If so, how? |

If a hold is not placed in the flight plan from the GPS database, then you are on your own and can only fly the hold "manually" with the heading bug and heading mode of your autopilot, not with GPSS. |
