I have just started playing with my new 696. I'm new to garmin, so perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but when I load an approach, it only puts the FAF and MAP in the flightplan, not any of the IAF. What gives?

That is standard operating practice for all Garmin portable GPS units.  Only their IFR-certified units have full approaches.

OK, then one would want to add the fixes to the flightplan. Which brings me to my next question. If you want to add a fix to the flightplan, and the fix happens to be close by, you can go to "nearest" -> intersection/airport/navaid -> highlight the one you want ->lots of useful info..... but how do you get it inserted into the flightplan? Nearest airport and recent waypoint are available on the FPL menu, but it would be useful to add a nearest VOR/intersection as a "recent waypoint", and then use that to add it to the flightplan. Any way around this?

It would be nice to be able to enter "Nearest" items into a flight plus but unfortunately that is not possible.

Moreover I think it would be much too high a workload to attempt to do this routinely on approaches.

I think a much better solution is to connect the Garmin portable to a 430/530/480. In that case the 430/530/480 flight plan and loadead approaches will automatically be transferred to the Garmin portable as well.
