On this approach (KCOE ILS 5) why does the Garmin 530 show waypoint D15.1?

This was a puzzle to me when I flew this approach with students recently during a simulator training exercise. Here is the explanation from Jeppesen:
It is a coding requirement that on a localizer based procedure, that the ending leg of a transition be 8 nm or less or within the reception range of the localizer.
As GEG is more than 8 nm from CF05, we have to use the coding that we have with a 4nm leg to CF05. This is a coding rule and applies to all localizer based procedures, not just as an exception here at KCOE.

Richard,
I am feeling really dumb here. What is the CF05 waypoint? I assume it is the beginning of the reception range of the localizer? Is this common on all ILS approaches? I do not see it depicted on the approach chart.

Hi Jim.
CFO5 stands for "Course Fix Runway 05" and it represents the point at which it is anticipated you will intercept the localizer. It is the 19.1 DME fix which you see on the approach chart.
CF fixes are commonly added to the coding of an approach with a procedure turn to give the GPS a means to depict your anticipated flight path after completing the procedure turn.
In this case there is no procedure turn using GEG IAF but as charted you would fly outbound on the 046 radial of GEG VOR for 19.1 miles and then intercept the localizer. The anticipated intercept point is charted but not named on the approach plate; the GPS database has named this point CF05 so that the GPS-based final approach course shown on the GPS lines up with the localizer.

Richard,
If I was flying this approach fully coupled with my 530 driving a STEC 55X.... I would want to be using "GPS" as I passed GEG and then inbound toward the localizer. After tuning the VLOC frequency to 110.7 and getting an ident I will need to push the "VLOC/GPS" to the "VLOC" position. Where would you plan on doing that in this example?

I would switch to VLOC at CF05.
