Suppose you were to fly this appraoch with the CDI set to VLOC and tuned to the localizer.  How would you identify the stepdown fixes?

Set the active GPS waypoint to IRUT .  This is a "fake" intersection in the 430/530 database which is located at the same location as the LOC DME transmitter.  You can read the distance to IRUT as equivalent to DME distance if that were available.
