It is important to be selective about asking pilots for transport.  Here are some guidelines that hopefully will help you answer "should I ask a pilot or not?"


                                   ****EXTREMELY IMPORTANT******

IN YOUR SUBJECT LINE, PLEASE LIST THE CITY AND STATE OF WHERE THE ANIMAL IS TO BE PICKED UP AND FLOWN TOO.  BY DOING THIS, IT WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR THE PILOTS TO SCROLL DOWN THE REQUEST LIST AND FIND THEIR AREA. THANK YOU!


1.  Is the animal capable of tolerating ground transport?  If so please save a pilot for an animal who will have a difficult time traveling and being transported from vehicle to vehicle.

2.  Is the animal a special needs case? This would include medical, senior age, amputee, etc.

3.  Consider the flight time allowed to accomodate each pilots type of plane.  A good rule of thumb is approximately a 4 hour flight.  Anything beyond that would have to be coordinated with a second pilot and plane.  This is not impossible but can be difficult.

4.  Please allow at least a two day lead time for the requested day of flight.  Planes need to be maintained and the weather is always a determining factor.  Have a back up plan ready for any delays.

5.  Communication and promptness is paramount.  It is important for rescues to be waiting for the pilot on each end of the transport. 

6.  Please have the necessary paperwork that is accompanying the animal and a collar and leash supplied.  A rabies certificate and a health certificate are recommended.


7. Ultimately, it is always the pilot and rescue agents choice to make the flight.  This should be a rewarding endeavor for all parties involved in giving a second chance to an animal in need.

Hi Everyone

Just a note about paperwork you as transport folks should require of us rescue types. If we ask you to fly an animal out you should know that we have permission to do so by the legal owner or legal caregiver. Maybe you want transport logs signed by us at both ends and maybe a disclaimer or other legal 'hold harmless stuff'.  Also, some sort of written assurance of security as to cages, carriers, etc?

Maybe all this is already done by you and I should just ask what documents you want us to fill out ahead of time for transport? Please let me know. Also, you posted that we should post a 'flyer' about the service at our local FBO or airport. Where do I get such a flyer?  Thanks

We want as little paperwork as possible.

As long as we know the animal is from a rescue organization with known contact info, that's all we need.

Keep it simple.   We have enough FAA paperwork to fly our planes.  We don't want any more.

You got it! I do understand. I owned and operated an air ambulance company from Buchanon Field in Concord, CA for many years. We flew mostly Cessna 421 and Lear 24.

Now retired and doing animal rescue and Red Cross gov't liaison.  Thanks

I see that Rich has already replied to you regarding the paperwork issue and that you understand where the pilots of Pilots-N-Paws are coming from :-)

As far as posting a flyer, if you will please visit http://www.pilotsnpaws.org there is a flyer link listed there that you can open, print out and post to your local small airports.  This is the best way other then the internet to let pilots know what we need.

I was too quick with my question. I found the flyer, printed it and will distribute it to my team at our meeting this evening. We will get it posted throughout Washington state and upload it to our contact in other places as well.

There is a great post about the ground work in gathering information in preperation for asking for a flight at http://aviation.meetup.com/95/messages/boards/thread/4486285
It talks about how to find the closest airports available, and how to find the distance.
Putting this type of information in transport request posts will really help the pilots quickly determine whether something is in their capabilities.
